This Quirky Kitchen has the Coolest Lighting
Eclectic lighting is the star ingredient in this Milwaukee, WI, space.

When Krista McCain, an acupuncturist, and her husband Gareth Eames, a financial product manager, were ready to overhaul the kitchen in their Craftsman-style bungalow, they set out to create a space as quirky and fun as their family. With the help of designer and friend Sarah Boardman, they cooked up a spot that has become the heart of their home.

Pendants That Pop
Krista wanted this kitchen to make a statement, so Sarah led her to two bold choices from Yii Lighting. The primary-color pendants are sold for kids’ rooms, but Krista loved the look, and she fell for the sconces because, she says, they’re as outlandish as she is. “It’s a perfect match!”

Eye-Catching Tile
These crackled ceramic tiles from Floor & Decor can appear blue, gray or black, depending on the time of day. “They’re like a mermaid’s tail,” Krista says. Sarah had the idea to install them on the entire wall. They add texture but don’t compete with the showier elements in the room.

Oversized Island
The white quartz counter is 9 feet long, so the kids can tackle homework here while Krista does her herbalist work and Gareth cooks. (He makes a mean roast chicken.) The island’s legs are painted Atlantic Waves by Hallman Lindsay to match the window trim. Metal stools from Wayfair play off the yellow discs in the pendants.

Dark Cabinets
“These were perfect for the Tim Burton–esque look we wanted,” Krista says of the cabinets from J&K Cabinetry. “White was definitely not an option for me.” The chrome knobs and acrylic pulls are from Liberty Hardware.
