A tall, carpeted cat tower can feel like it takes up the entire house — and in some cases, it may! I once lost half of my tiny apartment's living room to a four-tier behemoth that we named Kitty City because it felt like the size of a small metropolitan area. While it's important to satisfy your feline's craving for scratching and climbing, it's also important to find a toy that still allows your home to be YOUR home.

After more than a decade of living with cats (two, in fact), I have a pretty good handle on how to keep my felines happy while also maintaining some semblance of a stylish home. The key is to purchase design-conscious pieces that fit your style while also providing your cats with what they need to scratch, climb and play. Cat furniture has come a long way in recent years, with brands like Tuft + Paw and KATRIS creating furniture that looks right at home. Get the best of both worlds with fun furniture that's as functional as it is stylish. From cat beds to enclosed litter boxes, we've got your feline design needs covered.

Cat Beds

You’ve probably spent time searching for the perfect furniture for your home, so why ruin it with a less-than-beautiful pet bed? Satisfy your cat's love of small, enclosed spaces with a safe space that allows them to hide away and curl up unnoticed.

It doesn't get much more beautiful than the Stellar Cat Bed from Tuft + Paw. A semi-rigid sphere envelops a custom-fit faux fur blanket for total comfort and security, while the curved interior creates the perfect spot to curl up and rest. A small opening gives kitty broad views of his surroundings. Your cat will love this stunning hangout just as much as you.

A personal favorite in my home, the Catit Vesper Cottage is a two-level hideout with a sweet lookout point cats love. Both tiers come with soft, padded cushions for naps and play. Two bottom-level entrances ensure kitty can see from every angle so they never feel cornered. My cats have each claimed their respective cushion, and it's their new go-to spot to snooze in the house. Plus, installation couldn't be easier — no tools required!

Cat Shelves and Bridges

Tired of your cat using your kitchen counters like an obstacle course? Give them an alternate place to climb with wall-mounted shelves and bridges that actually look like abstract art. According to Fetch by WebMD, it's simply instinctive behavior for kitties to climb. "Think of it this way: cats love to hunt birds, and most birds are found in trees. Meanwhile, small rodents and ground-based prey are easier to catch from above. Climbing also helps cats keep away from potential predators. In your home, your cat will often seek out high spaces to act on these instincts." The best way to keep kitty off the counters? Give them alternate places to climb and "hunt." Cat shelves, towers and trees will satisfy their need — and keep your kitchen furball-free.

$99 $85

Talk about a cool spot for a catnap! While the hammock is great for relaxing, the jute-wrapped poles create a fun bridge for kitty to climb on the way. And while it may seem intimidating to attach to your walls, installation is a breeze with everything you need right in the box.

Cat Trees and Towers

If you must have a cat tower, why would you settle for a couple of pieces of wood wrapped in what looks to be discarded carpet samples? These stylish cat trees and towers will satisfy your cat's desire to be up high while remaining design-conscious enough to display freely — even in your living room.

$185

Almost like a piece of modern artwork, the Freetown Cat Tree is 51 inches of stylish yet functional fun. The durable tree features plush cushions, soft carpets, an open dome bed, a secret condo and a reinforced base plate for hours of interactive play. Plus, beige and white hues will fit into most homes with ease.

Cat Scratching Posts

You may not love it, but cats need to scratch! According to cat behaviorist Matt Wildman via The Humane Society, “Scratching is a normal, instinctive cat behavior … They do it to express emotions, like excitement or stress, to mark objects with their scent (they have scent glands in their paws), to remove the dead part of their nails and, often, just to get a good stretch.” When your cat claws up your sofa leg or area rug, they don’t realize what they’re doing is “wrong,” so it’s important to provide your cat with options that make you both happy, like a scratching post, corrugated cardboard surface or sisal scratchpad. Figure out what your cat loves and where they love to scratch, and you’ll have a recipe for success.

$45.99 $40

Tired of kitty clawing up the sofa leg? Give her an alternate place to scratch with this 22-inch-long, wall-mounted scratchpad. The natural wood frame and woven sisal can totally pass as wall art, too.

Cat Litter Box Enclosures

Cats are picky when it comes to where they handle their business. Enclosed? Open? Liners? No liners? Scented litter? It all comes down to your cat's individual preferences, and there's no universal rule as to what will work. There will be a lot of trial and error, and that's just part of being a cat parent. (My cats will only use the Jumbo Box from The Container Store as their litter box, and that's that.) The only rule that reigns supreme is that keeping their space clean and scooping daily will prevent problems. And once you find something that works, whether that's the container or the litter, stick with it. Switching up litter or even the container can result in your cat refusing to use the litter box.

If you're able to go the stylish litter box route, though, we suggest these discreet pieces that double as furniture or decor. Perfect for small, single-cat households, these sleek litter boxes will allow your pet to handle his business out of sight while keeping the litter tubs hidden. (Just don't forget to scoop!)

Your guests will never know what's really inside this midcentury-inspired cabinet, and your cat will appreciate the privacy, too. It's the perfect combination of functionality and style.
