Scary season is calling, and HGTV answered with Scariest House in America, starring comedian, actress and home-design enthusiast Retta who trekked across the country in search of the most horrifying, haunted houses in the United States.

Throughout the series, Retta visited nine eerie homes throughout the Midwest, Northeast and South, and it's time to for one to be named the "scariest" of them all. The best part of this moniker? The winning home is awarded a $150,000 renovation by Windy City Rehab designer and host Alison Victoria.

And the Scariest House in America Is ...

... Hansel & Gretel’s Frightening Fixer-Upper in Saunderstown, Rhode Island!

Take a look inside:

Not only would we never want to spend a night in this scary-looking home — pre-renovation, that is — it also held the biggest fright factor for Retta. (She counted six death traps during her tour.) The bathtub alone is enough to give anyone nightmares ...

The Story Behind the Scariest House in America

Homeowner Jeremy bought this 1,300-square-foot home, complete with three bedrooms, two baths, a spooky elevator that only goes from the second to third floor and multiple places where visitors can plummet to their deaths. Oh, and did we mention the previous owner's spirit is still hanging around?

“The Hansel and Gretal house is a house where things are askew. Its precarious exterior is just the beginning of this nightmare. The inside is a handmade amalgamation of a free-floating spirit,” said Retta.

Take a Look at the Incredible Renovation

Once Alison was able to get her hands on this creepy cabin in the woods, she turned it into a true fairy tale. The exterior is modernized by fixing the siding, painting it a chic black and bringing in tons of greenery and grass. We can’t wait for you to see what she did with the interior.

The exterior of the renovated home now boasts a signature Alison Victoria, all-black color palette.
