Contemporary Living Room With Tray Table

The design wish behind this living room: Create a peaceful space that feels contemporary and yet honors the apartment's original details, like the exposed brick wall and the marble fireplace. Muted colors help those elements shine. The coffee table is made of a vintage Moroccan brass tea tray.

The living room's side table is a vintage child's desk. Paired with the vintage table lamp, relaxed linen sofa and custom plywood art, the grouping gives the room a laid-back and unfussy feel.

The cute stools in this living room are made of repurposed cable reels, which were re-upholstered and topped with round cushions.

Wall Vignette with White and Gold Accents

On this wall, designers used some of the homeowner's keepsakes (including vintage candleholders) as the starting point for a pretty display. The salvaged shelf on the radiator was sanded, clear coated, then embellished with gold foil. The little glass bottles on top were dipped in white paint, the embellished with gold foil as well.

A heavy, solid bookcase might overwhelm this small living room. So instead designers went with a mesh shelf that felt smaller and airier, then filled it with used vintage books and vignettes.

Small Open Plan Kitchen With Vintage Stools

To maximize this jewel box of an apartment, designers removed a wall and joined the kitchen and living area. Using the same paint colors throughout for walls, cabinets, baseboards and window frames helped unify the spaces. Kitchen and eating bar countertops are walnut to add warmth.

For a cohesive look in the kitchen, the designers ordered unfinished kitchen cabinets, then had them spray painted gray to match the wall color.

Space is at a premium in this New York City apartment so, to make the kitchen feel bigger, designers used a monochromatic color palette on the walls. Countertops are pretty wood and a striking pop of visual interest comes from a few black-and-white floor tiles.
