Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner Show the Love for their BFF, “Aunt” Lisa
Kris Jenner’s best friend of 40 years, Lisa, has endured multiple hardships over the last decade. As she navigated the loss of her husband after a long illness and moved to a new home, Kris and her daughters decided to give back in a big way. The family teamed up with the Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott to give “Aunt Lisa” a brand new landscape to transform the home she purchased and remodeled in Hidden Hills, California. They want Lisa's new home to be an outdoor oasis.
“She’s the reason I moved here,” says Kris. “And this is where her heart is. Renovating her house was very overwhelming, and I was feeling overwhelmed for her.” Drew adds, “She already made the house beautiful. Now, let’s make the property beautiful.”
Designing an Outdoor Oasis
Kris and Kim weighed in on design and aesthetics from beginning to end during this five-week renovation. They took no shortcuts as they reinvented the flow of Lisa’s property. Their vision transformed it into an oasis suitable for resting and entertaining. They were dedicated to giving back to their friend and aunt who deserved a fresh start in a space that would make it easier to accommodate her children and grandchildren.
Kendall Takes Control
Kendall Jenner volunteered to help with the demo of Lisa’s existing property. The crew deconstructed concrete pads and old, existing landscape structures to make way for the new oasis.
Curb Appeal, Before
Lisa’s home is situated on a large piece of property in a neighborhood in Hidden Hills, California, but it lacked curb appeal. While the exterior of the home was recently refinished, the ongoing construction and interior remodel took a toll on the lawn and the existing landscape. Drew and Jonathan had a vision, and Kris Jenner knew just what details would complement Lisa’s style.
Curb Appeal, After
Nearly 400 individual plants were delivered to transform the entire exterior of Lisa’s home. Sod was used to establish a new grassy lawn which added polish to the entire perimeter of her big yard, and new trees were planted to offer privacy.
The Entryway, Before
A poorly maintained landscape can make any house look uninviting. Lisa’s outdated sidewalk, missing front step, dead landscaping and scattered rocks and stones distracted from the modern ranch home’s true beauty. Luckily, Drew and Scott had the vision and talent to build a landscape and pathway that coordinated to the existing style of the modern ranch home.
The Entryway, After
The European-inspired concrete sidewalk, steps and exterior lighting create a welcoming entryway that guarantee that Lisa’s home will be the prettiest on the block. The six olive trees lining the sidewalk are each over 60 years old. Instead of saplings, the mature trees provided immediate appeal and shade to give the impression that they were well-established in the environment.
The Front Yard, Before
Construction crews and vehicles can wreak havoc on the landscape around a home, and it was especially evident that Lisa’s front yard needed help. The old mulch and unkempt plants would need to be updated to provide a family-friendly outdoor space for Lisa and her grandkids.
The Front Yard, After
Sod always makes a huge difference in an outdoor renovation. Around Lisa’s home, Drew and Jonathan selected a native California grass that grows long and delivers a more “meadow-like” appeal. The crew installed 10,000 square feet of it, including in the areas along the entryway and around the pool in the backyard.
Backyard Appeal, Before
A large brick and concrete patio extended off the back of the home and into the backyard. Kris, Kim and Kendall knew that it needed to be modernized to coordinate with the new exterior of Lisa's ranch home, and Drew and Jonathan also had a plan to make a better use of this space so that it was ideal for entertaining.
Backyard Appeal, After
European-style concrete walkways redesign the exterior of Lisa’s new home. Dozens of plants and additional mature olive trees define the perimeter of the home and the sidewalk. To one side of the patio, the crew removed a swimming pool and replaced it with a freestanding fireplace. They also reinvented the space to include a formal dining table and state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen.
The Back Patio, Before
A large, deep swimming pool surrounded by brick casing and dated tile wasn’t exactly the look Kris, Kim and Kendall hoped to deliver for Lisa. The outdated patio finishes were also a stark contrast to the new, white, modern ranch exterior in which Lisa had already invested. The team had an entirely new vision for the backyard and sought to deliver a better outdoor experience.
The Back Patio, After
Drew and Jonathan went head-to-head when it came to deciding on whether or not to relocate the swimming pool, but ultimately determined that the space near the house would be best used as an entertaining area for Lisa, her kids, grandchildren and friends. A new freestanding fireplace and formal outdoor seating area now exist in the space previously used by the swimming pool and patio.
The Outdoor Kitchen
Lisa’s brand new, state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen adds more functionality to the backyard, and promises to make it easier for her to entertain and host parties. It has all the necessary appliances and features that you’d expect from an indoor kitchen, plus a large island with seating for guests. The team also installed a custom steel pergola to provide some structured shade and definition to the outdoor kitchen.
The Backyard, Before
An old stone retaining wall and staircase were in need of care. Not only was the crumbling structure a hazard, but it contributed to an unwelcome disconnect between the house and the backyard. Drew and Jonathan had a vision for how to marry outdoor spaces into a cohesive environment.
The Backyard, After
New retaining walls were painted white to complement the house, and poured concrete stairs add both function and appeal. The widened staircase also frames the home’s chimney and outdoor dining room table in a very intentional way. New landscaping also extends down the stairs and into the lower patio level of the property, which surrounds the new swimming pool.
The Backyard, Before
The shed and a large concrete slab occupied most of Lisa’s backyard – not exactly an outdoor oasis, or a space that was ready for company. To make the most of the property, the team had a vision that involved relocating the swimming pool.
The Backyard, After
The new, large rectangular pool and hot tub occupy the space that was once merely a concrete slab. Surrounded by modern seating options, a fire pit, and lush landscaping, the new pool area integrates into Lisa’s new backyard and provides her even more space for entertaining.
The Pathway, Before
Unkempt pathways leading around the house exposed utilities and proved difficult to polish. The design team had a vision for how they could improve the space to make it functional and suitable to match the design of the home.
The Pathway, After
New pebble stone lined with freshly mulched beds defines this around-the-house path like never before. Utilities are concealed simply using natural food fencing, and more new plants help to make the landscape feel established and complete.
