Get Festive for Diwali

Celebrate the Festival of Lights with an intimate, glamorous tablescape inspired by India itself. From jute placemats, mixed metal details and a block print tablecloth, we're showing how to set the perfect Diwali tablescape to inspire your own festive spread.

Create a Color Scheme

Brainstorm a few color scheme ideas before beginning. Although jewel tones such as reds, oranges, golds and pinks are typically used to decorate for Diwali, this tablescape showcases a modern take of colors while weaving in traditional elements.

Start With a Tablecloth

Begin by anchoring the table with a unique, beautiful block print tablecloth. Indian block print textiles are created by carving a wooden block into a pattern, then transferring an impression of the pattern onto the textile surface. Local artisans create small variations and imperfections that add to the charm and uniqueness of this process. If you're unable to source such a tablecloth, choose a bold, bright cloth to serve as the base.

Add a Touch of India

India is well known for its jute and cotton production, making these elements a natural fit for the table settings. Frayed jute placemats serve as the base for gold-rimmed plates topped with cream cotton napkins. The natural materials feel grounded while creating a sense of home.

Layer Colors With Flowers

A tablescape isn't complete without a beautiful floral centerpiece. Marigolds are the flower of happiness and celebration in Indian culture as they are used in weddings, prayers, new beginnings and more. Here, an eye-catching mix of golden marigolds, baby's breath and purple globe amaranth add an additional layer of color and interest to the table. To continue with the pop of color, two smaller floral pieces are placed on each side of the larger one.

Elements of Gold

During the festival of Diwali, families take out their finest golds and silver, polish them and use them throughout the season. To bring in a gold element, add touches throughout using gold-rimmed plates, bronzed flatware, vases and more.

Tie Napkins Organically

Skip the formal folds and glamorous napkin rings, and go for an organic look instead. Spread out a square napkin and pick it up from the center point. Tie it halfway down with jute thread. For an added whimsical touch, tuck in a stem of baby's breath.

The Festival of Lights

It wouldn't be Diwali without an element of light. Fill your table with diyas or candles to celebrate. For added height, utilize tapered candlesticks in small and medium holders. As the lights dim, the candles will gleam against the golds on the table.
