Enhance your dining table with a custom table runner. We made our table runner for Thanksgiving, but you can do this any time of year with any theme or pattern. This easy project utilizes a plain table runner, a foam stamp and gold fabric paint to create a piece of table art fit for any occasion. Don’t worry about perfection, embrace imperfections as they contribute to the handcrafted and artisan allure of your creation.

1. Prep Fabric and Workspace

Wash and dry the table runner to remove any sizing or starch from the manufacturer. Iron the runner if needed to create a flat, even surface. Gather your stamping materials and a ruler or measuring tape. Measure the runner and calculate how much space should be between each stamp. Lay down a drop cloth or plastic table cover to protect your work surface.

2. Load the Stamp

Squeeze a small amount of the paint onto a flat surface or a paint palette. Gently press the foam stamp into the paint, ensuring an even and light coat.

3. Blot the Stamp

Once the stamp is coated, press it onto scrap paper or cardboard to blot off excess paint. This step helps prevent excessive paint from smearing on the fabric.

4. Stamp the Table Runner

Make sure your table runner is lying flat on your work surface. Position the stamp at your desired location on the table runner. With gentle and even pressure, press the stamp onto the fabric. Hold it in place for a few seconds to allow the paint to transfer. Carefully lift the stamp straight up to reveal the stamped design. Don't worry about achieving perfect alignment or uniformity; the beauty lies in the handmade charm.

5. Repeat and Experiment

Continue stamping the table runner, spacing out the motifs as desired. Feel free to overlap or slightly rotate the stamp for variation. Remember that imperfections add character to the final product. Each stamp may have its own unique texture, creating a visually engaging and artisanal appearance. If there are any areas where the stamping appears faint or uneven, you can use a small paintbrush to touch up those spots with a bit more paint.

6. Allow to Dry

Once you've stamped the entire length of the table runner, set it aside to dry. Refer to the fabric paint's instructions for drying-time recommendations.
