Heather Rae El Moussa has been showing off her design chops during Season 1 of The Flip Off. The once luxury real estate agent forayed into Tarek's world of house flipping and home design during Season 1 of The Flipping El Moussas. Now with two seasons of the show behind her, she's revealing everything she's learned. Most recently, Heather wowed fans with a sleek fluted fireplace surround — as seen during the kitchen battle against Christina Haack in The Flip Off.

"This needs to be the focus when you walk in," said Heather. "I want eyes drawn to the fireplace ... not a dining table."

Originally Heather had planned to use fluted wood around the fireplace, but once Tarek made clear the wood surround would need a metal frame (due to fire safety concerns), she rethought the entire idea. To keep the design seamless, she opted for a custom-made fluted plaster surround. Juxtaposed against a balance of light and dark wood cabinetry in the kitchen, the result is a rich, layered and exra-cozy dining room statement.

How to Get a Fluted Fireplace Surround

We'll be the first to admit, a custom fireplace surround isn't exactly the most budget-friendly option (for fluted plaster we're talking thousands). However, Tarek and Heather pulled off a similar fireplace surround in Season 2 of The Flipping El Moussas for a fraction of the cost.

The secret: Instead of plaster, go for stone-look fluted tile slabs. The tile Heather and Tarek used here is around $10 per foot, but the entire surround — installation and all cost the duo less than $1,000 total. Not too shabby for a chic ambiance.

More Design Tips From Heather

Heather has also opened about her love of accent walls — i.e. using paint or wallpaper (she prefers textured wallpaper over patterned) to make one wall in a room stand out.

"We're taking risks here," said Heather. "Think about these high-end home [designers]. They take risks."

We can't wait to see what else she has planned for The Flip Off. Catch all-new episodes Wednesday nights at 8|7c on HGTV.
