The 5 Coolest Spaces in Christina Hall’s SoCal Smart House
From a home theater to a backyard sauna, the longtime HGTV host’s home has it all.
Christina and Josh Hall’s home in Newport Beach, California, is smart in both style and design. Futuristic features like the automatic sliding doors, remote controlled fireplaces and oversized TV projectors are balanced by organic texture, natural life (there are plants in almost every room) and serene colors.
“What we’re trying to do here is take a super-modern house and incorporate an organic, Bali vibe,” said the Christina on the Coast host while showing HGTV around.
Ahead: The home’s top five must-see spaces.
The Primary Bedroom
Christina went all-out Bali in her and Josh’s primary bedroom. Organic bedside pendants pop against a black accent wall covered in fluted molding. “We wanted it to feel relaxing, very zen,” says Christina. “We have more live plants, little sitting areas and a fire feature.”
“One of the best features that my vampire wife here loves is that this room completely blacks out with blackout shades,” says Josh. Not to be out done by the rest of the home’s smart features, there’s a remote that controls the shades, as well a projector screen that drops down from the ceiling.
“I like light when I want it, but I prefer the dark,” Christina admits.
The Backyard
Sixty-foot-wide automatic sliding doors open from the kitchen to the spacious backyard to create one unified space. Outside, a patio for dining, a luxe pool and a cushy lounge area come together to create one peaceful escape.
Christina's indoor-outdoor living space is perfect for entertaining.
“When it’s all open, it’s really beautiful for entertaining, and the kids always play out here so everything has a nice flow,” says Christina.
The Man Cave
Decked out with a replica DeLorean time machine from the movie Back to the Future, a sleek red dirt bike and Josh’s dad’s vintage car, this garage-like space is the crème de la crème of man caves. Josh decorated the space with a mix of ‘80s memorabilia and personal touches, like a photo of his grandmother, his old police locker and uniform and artwork created by Christina’s son, Hudson. It also features a swanky seating area and a garage door that opens to the outside.
Josh designed his man cave to look like an old garage.
The Sauna
Tucked in the corner of the backyard sits a wooden sauna (built by Josh from a kit Christina found online) worthy of a five-star hotel. In fact, Christina got the idea from a resort where she and Josh stayed.
“I get a lot of my inspiration from hotels, because they’re always up with the trends,” says Chirstina. "[This particular one] had an amazing spa with a sauna-ice bath vibe. We were doing that every day there and felt so good, so we thought, 'Why not recreate it at home?'"
The Home Theater
This cozy space is outfitted with lush leather chairs (that recline into beds!), cushy carpeting and a massive projector screen for dream-worthy movie nights.
“The kids love to make little forts down here when we have movie night, and the dogs have their dog beds too,” says Christina.
And there’s one extra-special feature we love: a twinkly ceiling that mimics a clear night sky — shooting stars and all. “We don’t have a guest room so this kind of becomes the guest room,” says Josh. “My dad loves falling asleep looking up at the shooting stars. It’s his spot.”
