The Wright Street house is the first renovation Mina and Karen have taken on in the historic Bates-Hendricks district, nearby to their own neigborhood of Fountain Square.

Crew cameras roll as Mina and Karen ponder the scope of this ambitious rehab. They bought this house sight-unseen for $7000. They plan to put $125,000 into the renovation.

Fire and smoke damage, as seen in these dramatic snapshots, are no obstacle for Karen and Mina as they're confident that, when it comes to old houses, they can fix just about anything.

Broken windows, a hole in the roof and mold in the basement were just some of the concerns based on initial inspection. But the house included ample square footage and plenty of room to reimagine and reconfigure.

Mina opted for a dark gray exterior with white brick columns and trim, and, in keeping with the bungalow feel of the house, envisioned a charming and semi-traditional interior.

Dated wood paneling was removed and a lighter palette selected to give the main living space a lighter and more open feel.

A highlight of the new living room is the accent wall with dimensional tile.

By far the most dramatic makeover in the renovation is the kitchen, which was badly fire damaged and barely recognizable as a kitchen.

A wall was removed to enlarge the kitchen and bring it forward in the floorplan.

The kitchen offers this inviting view on the dining room which features more modern furnishings and framed wildlife prints which -- actually sections of the home's original wallpaper that were salvaged by Karen.

Just a Touch of Modern

Master Bedroom, AFTER

An old porch and part of the original kitchen was torn out to make way for an all new master suite. Old seven-foot ceilings were raised to nine feet.

After essentially gutting and reconfiguring the inside, the house now contains four bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. A dormer was bumped out and frame in to create this guest room.
