The Inspiration
This modern-mountain family room from HGTV Dream Home 2019 in Whitefish, Montana, serves as the inspiration for our family room makeover. The homeowners just love this room’s relaxing vibe with its natural wood, pops of color and whimsical accents.
Before: Sort of Blah
In its existing state, Kristen and Dwight's family room was lacking in personality, color and practicality. One of the biggest issues they had was its waste of space with a massive span of emptiness right smack in the middle of the room.
After: Beauty and Function
Inspired by the earthy orange tones, cool blues and warm gray-brown of the HGTV Dream Home great room, Kristen and Dwight's redesigned family room is now packed with practical storage solutions, plenty of seating, happy colors and a floor-space plan that maximizes every square inch.
Easy Gathering Space
Keeping the emphasis on family time, the redesign of the family room is all about being able to spread out and enjoy the company of friends and relatives. With the oversized round coffee table centered in the room, it's easy for everyone to pull up a seat and participate in games or just enjoy conversation.
Sculptural Lighting
To keep the center of the room illuminated in a stylish manner, a chandelier was added directly above the round coffee table. During the day, this doubles as sculpture; however, after dark it provides plenty of light for anything the family decides to do in the space.
Modular Sectional
With three growing boys and a dog, space is always at a premium in this household. A modular sectional sofa was chosen so it can change with the boys as they grow. By simply adding this ottoman module, the sofa starts to take on an L-shape and turns the end of the sofa into a full-fledged chaise lounge.
Kid-Proof Finishes
An excellent way to ensure safety in spaces where kids are active is to choose tables with no sharp edges. This round coffee table is not only excellent for safety reasons, its rustic look has a worn patina so the more it's used, the more character it takes on.
Room for a Party
Altogether there's seating for 14 people in this family room. Not only does the modular sofa seat 10, but the cowhide and forged-iron stools add instant space for impromptu visitors. There are also two collapsing butterfly chairs that can be moved around the space as needed.
Easily Moveable Furnishings
For maximizing every square inch of the family room, collapsible butterfly chairs move around from space to space. In the event of anyone wanting some quiet reading time, the chairs can be pulled into corners, resulting in the feeling of a cozy reading nook.
Before: TV Wall
Prior to the makeover, the TV wall was lacking personality. To make the wall more aesthetically pleasing, it needed to be dedicated to art with concealed storage using stylish options that also added character.
After: Art + Storage
What was a lackluster wall with a dark TV centered on it is now a major focal point with a storage credenza, collapsible butterfly chairs and a colorful art piece featuring a bison — a nod to the wildlife surrounding the inspiration room in Montana.
Balanced Spaces
Symmetry is the name of the game on the art wall. To keep the area feeling balanced, a pair of chairs flanks the console table while a pair of oval mirrors surrounds the bison art above.
Mountain Style
In keeping with the Western look of the inspiration space in Montana, many of the furnishings play up mountain-style textures and prints including the Southwest-style area rug, reclaimed wood and cowhide prints.
Layers
One of the biggest transformations in the space was also the easiest. By layering this chunky Southwestern-style rug on top of the wall-to-wall carpet, the room instantly took on the feeling of being more vibrant and personal.
Sparkles in Every Direction
For proper illumination, this chandelier was chosen because its 12 bulbs cast light in all different directions.
Before: Sofa Wall
The homeowners, Kristen and Dwight, had their worn and tired sofa from their previous house pushed up against one wall, creating a huge waste of space in the middle of the room. To better utilize the space, this wall is going to be reworked as the media wall to house their TV and all of the components.
Hidden TV
Staring at a reflective black rectangle is not ideal in a room meant for interaction. So, when the TV is not in use, this entertainment unit has sliding doors which keep it hidden from sight.
Warm Pops of Color
For more Montana charm, throw pillows and blankets in the same shade of orange used in the HGTV Dream Home were added to all of the seating areas in the room. A nod to the upholstered moose seen above the fireplace in Montana, a smaller and more practical moose wall sculpture was chosen for this room.
Movie Room
With the sliding doors open, the TV takes center stage as needed. Also, the chunky blackout drapery on the windows helps control all of the glare when TV is being watched during the day.
More Than a Place for the TV
The wall of storage includes some open shelving for displaying plants, games and books.
A True Family Room
What was once a lackluster space at the top of the stairs is now the most used spot in the house. The colors and textures draw the family and their friends in, and the floor-space plan allows for plenty of people to gather with ample room.
