Before we had elaborate ceramic Christmas villages with miniature ice rinks, lights and moving figurines, putz houses (pronounced pootz) were the star of the season. These little structures, also called “glitter houses” because they’re covered in sparkles, first became popular during the early 1900s. The name comes from the German word “putzen,” meaning “to clean” or “to decorate.” The shimmery houses are back in style, and now you can find all sorts of options to build your own neighborhood.
