Fire pits are the ultimate gathering spots for a reason: They're warm, cozy and oh-so inviting. And we're loving the latest trend of fire tables that add extra surface area to your fire pit for setting drinks and food or propping up your feet. Additionally, some fire tables have lids to create a solid surface for extra serving or dining space.
How to Choose the Best Fire Table
Start by looking at your outdoor space to figure out which size and shape will work best. Fire tables come in any shape (round, square, rectangular) and size. While bigger fire pits will create more square footage of heat, keep in mind the all-important heat output.
Fuel Source
When it comes to the heat source for your fire table, select from gas (either propane or natural) or wood-burning.
The fuel source for wood-burning fire tables is, you guessed it: wood. Hardwoods such as oak, ash, hickory and walnut burn hotter than softwoods. When you throw a few extra logs on the fire, your heat output naturally increases. For the cleanest burn (i.e. less smoky), opt for kiln-dried firewood.
Natural gas fire tables are hooked up to gas lines and fueled by your utility company. It's the most permanent fuel source and requires professional installation.
Propane fire tables are typically powered by a 20-pound propane tank, which is easy to light and extinguish with a simple turn of a knob. The propane tank is either hidden inside the fire pit or connects to a line separately. When you need to refill or replace your propane tank, head to your local hardware or grocery store — they'll have you covered. While propane tends to be much more expensive than natural gas, it burns more efficiently. Not to mention, propane fire pits are customarily simpler to install.
Heat Output
You don't sacrifice warmth with gas fire tables. Each is rated with a heat output that's measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). The higher the BTU, the more heat your fire table will produce. Most gas fire tables range from 30,000 to 60,000 BTUs, though they can go up to 100,000 BTUs.
When it comes to wood-burning fire tables, the heat output does depend a bit more on the size of the fire pit, as well as the type of wood you use.
